United Kingdom. British libraries now have a new self-lending system for their users based on radio frequency identification technology, RFID, which allows the recognition and location of items. The system, provided by 3M, an American multinational company dedicated to researching, developing, manufacturing and commercializing diversified technologies, operates with SelfCheck Systems and Red Tags, labels designed for the loan of media such as CDs and DVDs.
With the SelfCheck customers receive the loans and make the returns easily and quickly, in addition, as the system integrates the payment options, they can cancel the fees in the SelfCheck terminals.
The system will be installed in 13 Libraries of Warrington Borough Council, already in operation at the Lymm, Warrington, Penketh and Stockton Heath facilities; since the end of 2009 in the Burtonwood library and during this year they will be installed in three more libraries.
Also in Southwark, the John Harvard Library has the self-service solution and three other local facilities are expected to install the system.
