Japan. Sony Corporation announced that it has developed a mercury-free alkaline battery (LR) button, and that it plans to market six models of this environmentally sensitive product. In conventional button-type alkaline batteries, mercury was added to the anode material to prevent the formation of hydrogen gas. This product incorporates a technology that combines absorbent raw materials in the cathode. Combining this achievement with existing technology that prevents the formation of hydrogen gas in the anode, Sony has managed to eliminate the use of mercury in this new battery.
