Surveillance cameras for prisons

The use of video surveillance cameras in penitentiaries or prisons around the world has become more common today. The new technological implementations protect the common areas of these places, allowing both police officers, prisoners and visitors to be in continuous observation in order to identify the exact time and place in case of any unwanted event.

In Latin America, the use of prison chambers is all the rage and most countries in the region are using different electronic security systems.

In Spain, for example, there are cameras inside and outside prisons, such as the Brian and Quatre Camins prisons in Barcelona, which have advanced electronic surveillance systems that reduce the number of police officers assigned to external supervision. Also in the new Castellón II penitentiary center in Valencia, cameras were placed to monitor the entire place.

Mexico is another of the countries where these security solutions are being installed the most; in the Center for the Execution of the Legal Consequences of Crime in Mazatlan, cameras had to be placed due to the actions that took place at the beginning of November. This center had a security system, which was destroyed due to a strong thunderstorm. Also the North, East and South prisons of mexico city will have 85 CCTV cameras for each one, to increase security in these local prisons and combat corruption. The protection function of these cameras will be reinforced with detectors of prohibited metals, substances and objects.

For its part, in Uruguay, giving development to the plan "High technology in matters of public security" video surveillance will be installed in the seven main establishments of the country. Also in Colombia, the tender award hearing was held in recent days to provide security technologies to 10 new prisons, where it is planned to invest about 54 billion pesos (Colombian).

Complementary to the above, in recent days, GVI Security Solutions, representative of Samsung Electronics, won a contract to provide a video surveillance system for the prison system of one of the largest countries in Latin America. This project, which began in November, includes a wide selection of high-performance video surveillance solutions encompassing anti-vandalism cameras selected to serve the location and specific needs of the environment in the prison system, including indoor, outdoor and accessory applications.

This project also features a dual pc-based codec standalone DVR, as well as a range of controllers, transceivers, hubs and switches.

This solution improves the prison conditions of this Latin nation under rigorous parameters necessary due to the growth of crime and the threat of narco-terrorism. The initial installation is carried out in five of the correctional facilities of the penitentiary system and is expected to be completed before the end of 2008.
