Nowadays cyber attacks have become the biggest fear of companies and governments. Hundreds of firms in the world from different economic sectors have been affected by cybercrime, which is being presented through targeted attacks, social engineering or automated threats.In 2007, according to studies conducted by CSI (Computer Crime and Security Survey), Mcafee, Symantec and RSA, U.S. organizations lost on average $350,424, compared to $168,000 the previous year; the main cause of these losses was financial fraud, and 18% of those who suffered security incidents were victims of "targeted attacks".
The new threats that harm corporate networks are not viruses but browser-based attacks, which install malicious software to violate the security of companies, mainly those that are in the health, public, banking and public services sectors.
Last year the biggest online crimes were presented through malware, bots, Trojan horses, phishing and viruses, which entered through social networks, spam emails or online games.
As we know there is no precise and proven strategy that prevents these crimes from occurring on the network, however there are some protection mechanisms such as firewalls, antivirus and vulnerability assessments, among others, that help these attacks to be prevented or mitigated.
