Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, who inaugurated the new center, expects the number of public residences monitored to increase to 20, expanding this security system in its first phase in which $9.8 million has been invested. In the same way, it is planned to install cameras in another 30 housing complexes (in the second phase of the project) in October of this year.
In this Control Center of Surveillance Systems work 22 policemen, 25 reservists of the Uniformed and five employees of the Department of Housing. Surveillance with the cameras is done 24 hours a day, throughout the year.
Since the installation of this security plan in 2005, crime rates have decreased, so much so that in February of last year only one crime of aggravated assault was registered.
