Trends in identification technologies

The shift in the use of trusted IDs drives greater adoption of advanced mobile and smart card technology, increased cloud relevance, and new IoT use cases.

BY SECURITY SALES

HID Global envisions a shift in the use of identification technology that will lead to greater adoption of mobile devices and the latest smart card technology, increased importance and reliance on the cloud, and a radically new way of conceiving reliability in intelligent and Internet of Things (IoT) environments.

Ultimately, HID Global predicts that the trends of 2017 will transform the way trusted identities are used with smart cards, mobile devices, electronic apparel or accessories, embedded chips and other "smart" objects, particularly in  regulated industries such as government, finance and healthcare delivery. This transformation will precipitate the transition from traditional systems to NFC (Near Field Communication), Bluetooth Low Energy technologies, as well as advanced smart card technology to meet the changing needs of businesses and governments around the world.

The forecast for 2017 is also based on a breakthrough in the adoption of mobile ID technology that occurred in 2016. An example of this trend, whose effect is felt across the industry, is that HID Global experienced tremendous demand in the implementation of its mobility solutions in general and has an extensive list of future customer installations for optimized ID verification for mobile applications.

"HID Global has forecast key trends based on a broad view of the market and in close collaboration with customers and partners who are evaluating and implementing innovative solutions in different markets around the world," said Stefan Widing, President and CEO of HID Global. "We have been at the forefront of the most important technological transformations over the years. HID Global believes that 2017 will mark an important milestone in the industry as organizations look to employ the widest range of smart devices. This will have a direct impact on how customers perceive and use trusted IDs on both mobile devices and smart cards to carry out more activities in more connected environments in the coming years."

HID Global's predictions focus on four significant trends for 2017, which will influence how organizations create, manage and use trusted identities across a wide range of new and existing applications.

Increased adoption of mobile devices and advanced smart cards highlights the need for reliable IDs

As with the adoption of consumer trends in information technology in previous years, in 2017 there will also be a greater popularization of security, with greater demand from users, who want to open doors, access cloud resources, make printouts of documents customized and adjusted to their needs and deploy printed credentials remotely or perform other transactions and daily activities. using trusted IDs on their phones, electronic apparel or accessories or smart cards.

Trusted IDs that provide security, privacy, and convenience will provide a new level of security to these applications and transactions, while also being in a prime position to make secure access more personalized.

The industry will seek comprehensive identity relationship management that takes into account the need to authorize access based on context or circumstances to achieve risk-level authentication in trusted IDs assigned to people, devices, data, and objects in smart offices, buildings, and other environments that are becoming increasingly connected.

The cloud will be given greater relevance through "hybrid" solutions that combine access to on-premises and cloud resources to create common management platforms for digital  IDs

Organizations are recognizing an interdependence between technologies and platforms that is necessary to achieve business agility and carry out cost management, as well as to provide a better experience to users in environments with a mobile workforce, or for digital commerce and relationship management that continues to require greater reach, flexibility and security.

In banking, government, the healthcare sector, as well as other regulated markets, multi-factor authentication for physical and computer access control will have more opportunities to merge into integrated systems that will also provide a more comfortable experience to users and increase the level of security.

This model will make it easier for administrators to implement and maintain an integrated system throughout the entire identification lifecycle, from its incorporation into the system to its deactivation;

It will allow to monitor and manage the access rights of employees as their role within the organization changes, ensuring that employees only have access to the resources they need in their current role.

The issuance of credentials for physical ID cards will also undergo a digital transformation, as the use of cloud technologies will enable managed service models for credential printing and encryption.

New Internet of Things (IoT) use cases will connect more people, places and objects, reinforcing the need to ensure the Trusted Internet of Things (IoTT)

Trusted identities will increasingly be employed to help protect, personalize, and enhance the user experience across an increasingly wide range of industry segments that are embracing the potential of IoT.

Organizations will seek to optimize processes and operations using real-time location systems, features and services based on presence and proximity detection, asset health monitoring solutions and cloud-based models, for emerging IoT applications that use bluetooth low energy consumption. Such applications will include a growing number of energy efficiency, productivity, and security-oriented applications that will require knowing the identity of occupants in a space to manage environmental conditions, reserve meeting rooms, and self-configure audiovisual equipment and alarms.

Bluetooth-low energy solutions will also encourage the advancement of existing secure presence testing capabilities to incorporate predictive analytics and capabilities based on location technologies.

Consolidation of the incorporation of trusted identities in the daily activities of companies and consumers

Trusted IDs will become an inherent feature of more use cases, not simply a complementary feature. This "security from design" trend will lead to many more practical approaches to the use of digital IDs in an increasing variety of activities, services and industries.

In addition to the popularization of safe use cases, new applications will emerge, such as employee congregation functions to attend emergencies, as well as the need to determine more accurately and in real time who is in a building.

New capabilities for managing and using trusted IDs will be driven by the rise of temporary offices, mobile workers and the evolution of workplaces, where adapting to the preferences of the current talent pool is driving the need for more open and flexible workspaces. Consumers will also begin to see the use of trusted identities in numerous everyday situations, such as ensuring the authorized use of industrial and heavy machinery, as well as the creation of new ways to protect students and validate the identity of drivers.

These trends will foster new experiences for users, tailored to the needs of vertical markets. Here are three particularly strong examples:

Banking: A transformation of digital IDs will foster consistency across multiple service channels to improve the user experience, from instant card issuance that is revolutionizing the way customers receive new or replacement debit and credit cards, to "out-of-band" automatic notification features, which reinforce the level of reliability and reduce fraud for consumers. while offering a much simpler route to regulatory compliance for financial institutions. Digital IDs will also force the industry to increase levels of reliability, strengthening the association of a user's true identity (biometrics) with their digital IDs.

Government sector:   Trusted IDs will change the way citizens interact with government agencies and systems. Passports, national IDs, driver's licenses and other credentials will coexist with revolutionary new technologies to change the way IDs are issued by government bodies and used by citizens. Citizen IDs are about to migrate to mobile phones this year, state and national governments will begin offering the option to carry mobile driver's licenses and other mobile identification systems in addition to the ability to carry the physical document. Meanwhile, the combination of mobile devices with innovative physical and logical features will allow more options to be offered to government agencies to stay one step ahead of counterfeiters by advancing in the security, personalization, management and issuance of physical documents.

Health sector: In the increasingly connected healthcare environment, institutions will seek to implement better systems to improve the patient experience and improve efficiency, while protecting and managing access to equipment, facilities, patient data, and prescriptions or electronic prescriptions for controlled substances throughout the healthcare process. From hospital to home, healthcare organizations will look to combine strong authentication with new IoT applications to address these challenges.

HID Global anticipates that the change in the use of identification technology will drive industry trends in 2017, along with new solutions and features that will improve the user experience for years to come.
