Video security in all locations

altTelekom Malaysia revamped its security system over the past year.  It included some audio features that allow for real-time alerts and distress calls from some parts of the building.

One of the sensitive issues of internal operation that must control a company that has been in frank growth in recent years, and that today has about 30,000 employees, is security in all buildings where it has a headquarters or offices.

This is the case of the company Telekom Malaysia, which for the coming years has an ambitious plan to expand its offices in the center of Kuala Lumpur, capital city of that country.

During 2010, the company's management decided to modernize the security of its facilities and implement a new video surveillance system that would provide high scalability functions and integrated monitoring to security personnel on site.

Considering the thousands of employees located across all Kuala Lumpur offices and the existing network structure, IT management decided that a network surveillance solution with high flexibility of integration and centralized management would better fit the needs of the company.

Implementing this type of solution would simplify cable lines and eliminate reliance on CCTV cameras, which typically have lower resolution and are more expensive than modern IP cameras — and ultimately reduce costs while offering superior video surveillance.

The new system

After evaluating different brands, environmental conditions and specifications of this project, Telekom Malaysia reduced its selection of 322 models of IP cameras from 3 trusted brands, including Acti, Sony, Mobotix and a few existing analog cameras.

For video surveillance recording, he selected QNAP's VioStor VS-8040U-RP standalone NVR for its compatibility with IP cameras, and with six simple setup and connection steps.

In addition, along with the configuration that allows each camera to be supported by VioStor's eight 2TB hard drives with RAID 5 redundancy, to ensure reliable video surveillance in the protection of personnel and company facilities.

Sony's SNC-RS86 outdoor speed domes, supported by QNAP's VioStor NVR, are primarily used to monitor the building's surroundings, such as the parking lot, the street in front and the front yard.

For its part, the SNC-RS46 indoor speed dome is mainly used for the main entrance and emergency exits, as it supports several PTZ and audio functions that allow real-time alerts and distress calls from some parts of the building.

The Mobotix Q24-SEC-D11 has a unique 360-degree panoramic view, suitable for archive rooms, covered parking lots and general office areas.  It covers a wide range of surveillance, which eliminates the need for any additional IP cameras, which is an additional cost saving.

"This type of cross-building surveillance solution requires decentralized storage of QNAP NVR data, remote access, and centralized management. The QNAP NVR has reduced bandwidth resources and successfully adapted to local network infrastructure anywhere in the building," said Syahrul, Technical Support Manager at VADS.

Other features
The advanced event management features integrated with the VioStor NVR are other highlights of the new video security system installed at Telekom Malaysia.

So are the initial configuration of motion detection, alarm entry, connection failures and recording can be made on the schedule after the day. If any irregularities are detected, an alarm notification can be sent to the security office of the Telekom Tower.

On-call personnel can then take the necessary protective measures. In terms of storage capacity, each VS-8040U-RP can connect with 40 IP cameras.

Up to 16GB of highly reliable storage is combined with H.264 video compression to save hard drive space, the company's security staff can easily and securely record and monitor all IP cameras installed around the facility.

The technical support manager at VADS indicated that "Managing more than 250 cameras of different brands and original DVRs in the Telecom Malaysia building is a very hard and stressful job; we've been running from here to there every day for the sole purpose of making sure the whole system is working well."

He indicated that to solve this problem, they found James Booi, general manager of Semboyan Teliti Sdn Bhd, who introduced them to the QNAP NVR solution. "This solution puts all the different brands of cameras on one platform and offers powerful backup manageability with that, now the impossible is possible."

QNAP NVRs
QNAP Security, developer of NVRs embedded in Linux, has implemented its award-winning storage and RAID technologies to deliver its most innovative standalone NVR for local viewing.

The system guarantees a notorious stability in remote monitoring, recording and surveillance tasks in various environments, but also offers great simplicity. In addition, the QNAP solution allows users to choose network cameras suitable for different situations instead of being limited to the resolution of traditional CCTV.

Telekom Malaysia is a provider of information and communication technologies in Malaysia. Its strength lies in its products and services, and in various aspects of the industry, such as research and development, as well as value-added innovations.

With its expanding business, the company has invested in some subsidiaries such as VADS Berhad (VADS), one of the service providers in the managed ICT segment; Multimedia University (MMU), an institution of higher education; and the commercial directory company of the Yellow Pages group, among others.
