Experience and training strengthen security

altHis life has been dedicated to security, before in the public from the Peruvian Navy and now from the private in different companies. For Herbert Calderón, training is essential for professionals in his area of work.

Taking care of the borders on land, sea and air is the main function of the Armed Forces of a country. Therefore, the strategic training to maintain security that the military receives, makes them perfect candidates to link to the private security industry at the time of their retirement.

This is the case of Herbert Calderón Alemán, our Professional of the Month invited for this edition, who today serves as Corporate Manager of Integral Security of the Gloria Group in Peru.

But for this Navy Officer, in retirement since 2008 with the rank of Captain, young and with great experience like most of the military when they retire, the security industry was no stranger because since 2005 it was linked to the International Association of Security Professionals, ASIS.

He assures that the close relationship between military life and private security was one of the motivations to reach this industry. "According to my specialty in the Navy and having belonged to the Special Forces, they gave me enough experience to link me in private security."

Hand in hand with ASIS
His first approach to the industry was made by the hand of the association, from which he received in 2005 the Certificate of Professional Protection, CPP, through the Colombia chapter. "Since that same year I am disseminating the ASIS standards, through the CPP and PSP certifications."

With the work in the dissemination of the ASIS standards, he managed to be appointed as president of the Peru chapter, a position he currently holds. "From this scenario we carry out training activities and activities in non-profit dissemination of the standards and thus improve safety in the environment."

Our Professional of the Month explains that the CPP is a certification for heads and security managers, in which they cover topics such as the security of the personnel and physics of the company's headquarters, investigations, risk management, emergencies, elements that are necessary for a security plan and program.

Among its functions, the CPP must carry out the diagnosis of the elements that constitute threats against the operation of the organization, prepare the organization for a contingency, solve the crisis and give recovery through plans, programs, education to the system. As well as conceptualizing the improvements.

Difficulties of the CPP
In the companies in which Herbert Calderón Alemán has worked in recent years as head of integral security, he has had to face the threats of different order that arise in modern organizations.

"The problems are basically in the fields of natural disasters, internal and external crime and social threat. The CPP knows about the tools to diagnose threats and provide solutions to those problems, as well as their monitoring," he says.

In fact, he says that "I have managed to face the requirements and threats of organizations through the tools learned and used in the path of certification, which is extremely successful for any professional in any field of security."

The objectives of a CPP are as changing as the security needs of a modern organization, in which threats are constantly growing. If the system is damaged, it will cause damage to the entire organization, for example in the issue of natural disasters and their consequences if precautions and solutions are not taken in this regard.

Highlights our Professional of the Month who knows about safety in the workplace allows to raise fundamental information such as the real threats of the organization and be able to treat it and solve its failures or risks. "Without a correct evaluation we will not know about the problems and we will give an adequate solution."

To achieve these objectives, one of the fundamental aids is electronic security, an important part of any physical security system. It allows to detect the threat through the sensor system, CCTV, access controls, among others.

Social problems, an opportunity
Currently, Latin America faces security problems in some cities, added to other risk factors, make the region have ample possibilities for the industry.

In this regard, Herbert Calderón argues that "with the problem of crime, kidnappings, natural disasters, social issues, Latin America increasingly requires the presence of an appropriate security system to protect modern organizations."

Finally, he emphasizes that training for the security personnel of a company is important, since it is the first line to face threats. "They must manage appropriate and competent standards to understand, improve communication and offer more solutions to problems."

Therefore, in his resume there are several studies related to the subject of security, among them are: Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and Physical Security Professional (PSP) of ASIS International; Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiner; and Specialist in Security Administration and Master in Security and National Defense, the latter two studied in Colombia.
