'I have made my hobby, my occupation'

Rubén Fajardo Correa is a prominent Mexican businessman linked to the security industry for almost 30 years. He currently manages the destinations of Siprosi Corporativo S.A. de C.V. and Specialist International Training, both member companies of the Cidec Group.

by Álvaro León Pérez S.

His career in the sector dates back to 1982 when, thanks to his training in executive protection and supervision of safety and security, he was relocated to the corporate security area of the Infra Group, after working in the areas of human resources and labor relations of that company and others such as Grupo Nacobre and Grupo Guindi.

"During this period I received training and guidance from Captain Salvador Alcántara Enríquez, who awakened my interest in safety and security," he recalls.

Since that time he has dedicated all his talent to the provision of comprehensive security services, an activity that he did not interrupt even in 1983, the year in which he concluded his career as a lawyer at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and began to alternate the tasks of his law firm with advice and training in security.

Precisely, in 1986 Fajardo Correa created in the company of a group of specialists the Mexican Institute of Training in Security and Protection A.C.

Two years later he founded Sistemas de Protección y Seguridad Integral Siprosi, a company that under his direction was launched in 1992 to conquer various Latin American markets, becoming Siprosi Corporativo S.A. de C.V., which currently provides services to public and private companies in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Central America.

The other facets of the entrepreneur
Rubén Fajardo Correa was born in Ciudad Sahagún, in the state of Hidalgo, on March 4, 1960 and is married for 26 years to an Educator and Bachelor of Pedagogy, who after retiring began to work with him becoming one of his closest collaborators.

Together, they are the parents of two children; the oldest is 23 years old and has a degree in Communication Sciences, while the youngest, 19 years old, is in his first year at university.

Like any devoted parent, this entrepreneur takes advantage of his free time to be with his wife and children.

"I really enjoy going to the movies and resting with my family when I can. The last 12 years I have acquired the hobby of traveling, both to work and to learn and walk. I have had the opportunity to be accompanied by my wife or one of my children when I travel for work, and I take the opportunity to know the countries where I go, "says he, who has visited countries as varied as Singapore, Denmark, Argentina and Austria, among others.

Fajardo is also a fan of technology and as a young man he used to arm and disarm whatever device fell into his hands. His fascination with artifacts and all kinds of instruments has earned him that his friends usually tell him nicknames such as 'Mister Gadget', 'Sport Billie' or 'El Chacharitas'.

Without a doubt, this interest has served him well in his professional work.

"My wife says I move like a fish in water because I've made my hobby my occupation. I certainly spend a lot of my time reading texts that address issues of security, administration and human resources," he says.

"I like action, adventure or comedy movies, unlike dramas. I study issues related to human intelligence and philosophy, I am struck by social and political issues, and since 2001 I belong to a Masonic lodge in Mexico," he emphasizes.

Achievements, objectives and challenges
The Director of Siprosi Corporativo is clear about the success factors of his company, which has four internal senior consultants and a network of associated consultants throughout Latin America.

"First, state-of-the-art aptitude and technology; secondly, responsibility; third, tailor-made service, diversity and variety of options; fourth, honesty; and fifth, reliability, always doing things right from the beginning," he says.

Regarding the objectives that a security company must have, Fajardo Correa believes that the main thing is to convince customers that although security is not the most important thing for a business, it is necessary that there is security for there to be good business.

"The security manager must learn to measure and sell safety not only in terms of reaction, but also, even more, in terms of prevention since this will result in reduction of losses. You also have to think about how to integrate security into the business value chain, so it is imperative to learn the language of the entrepreneur and align security in that context."

In the same way, the manager identifies the challenges faced by an organization like his, dedicated to the training of human resources specialized in integral security.

"We have the challenge of articulating what has to do with the professional attitude, ethics and deontology of public and private security practitioners; with specialization aimed at providing the skills knowledge and skills to do things well done and the first time. All this leads to high quality standards," he says.

A rich track record
The Professional of the Month of this edition of SECURITY SALES knows well what he is talking about. His concepts are not only supported by three decades of experience in the field, but also by the long series of international recognitions and distinctions that have been conferred on him in this time.

In 2000 the American Society for Industrial Security, Asis International, recognized him as a Certified Protection Professional. That same year he was appointed Certified Protection Officer by the International Foundation of Protection Officer.

In 2008, Asis International presented him with the Platinum Award for being the most successful trainer, worldwide, of candidates for the Title Certified Protection Professional. Only a year later he received from this association the certification that accredits him as a Physical Security Professional.

Rubén Fajardo Correa is also founder and Executive Secretary of the Inter-American College of Protection Professionals, an institution that awarded him the degree of Certified Security Director in 2002.

Additionally, he has worked as a professor in security matters at various universities in Latin America and has been a speaker at national and international congresses in Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and the United States.

And the future what?
"Uncertainty and adversity are hallmarks of today's times, you can no longer be a specialist in just one branch of security because the threats are multidimensional and extraterritorial. Security organizations must become integrators of solutions and must establish strategic alliances to offer complete answers," says the entrepreneur.

For him, a comprehensive security system must articulate four components, namely: facilities, equipment, processes and people. This according to the needs, possibilities and risks of the client.

Fajardo Correa also encrypts his success on a personal premise: "One of my biggest convictions is that I am in this because I have more friends than clients. I always try to offer the most professional service I have at my disposal and I design my work thinking about what I would like to be offered to solve a problem. I also consider a key to my positioning my interest in knowing everything about security and being at the forefront, not only in what is happening, but also in what is going to happen, "he concludes.
