600,000 Macs infected by Flashback Trojan including hundreds in Cupertino

ArsTechnica quotes a Russian antivirus company called Russian Dr. Web as saying that hundreds of thousands of Macs are infected with the Flashback Trojan. The attack takes advantage of an old Java vulnerability that Apple just released patches this week.

Variations of the Flashback Trojan would have infected more than half a million Macs worldwide, according to antivirus company Dr. Web. The company made an announcement on Wednesday, first in Russia and later in English-about the Mac botnet, first they say there are 550,000 infected Macs, however Dr Web analyst Ivan Sorokin posted on Twitter that the account had risen to 600,000, with 274 robots, including the Cupertino check-in, California, where Apple's headquarters are located are on that list.

The company Dr. Web said more than half of the infected computers were in the U.S. (including 274 in Cupertino) and 20% in Canada. Malware is installed after visiting a compromised or malicious web page. Obviously, it would be a good idea to update the Mac computers of your belonging.

If you think one of your machines may be infected, F-Secure has instructions on how to use the terminal to find out. If the numbers are true, it is likely that some of our readers are infected. Please write if yes.
