Business continuity guide for SMEs

In recent years we have been spectators of a series of events that have undoubtedly remained fixed in our retina. The fire of the Windsor Tower in Madrid (12/02/2005), the serious power and road cuts in Tenerife (February 2010) or the snow storm in Catalonia (March 2010) are some examples. With this, we want to reflect on the certain possibility that incidents occur and that these incidents affect our business.

Continuing with one of the aforementioned cases, the Windsor Tower had a security system according to current regulations, but did not have a fire control system. The consequences, several companies with their activities paralyzed and judicial processes between companies and insurers for the civil liability derived, which would amount to more than 180 million euros. Therefore, as a result of this event, it seems that a planning more adjusted to the real characteristics of the building could have avoided, or at least, diminished its effect.

With the Practical Guide for SMEs: how to implement a Business Continuity Plan, we want to make available to all organizations, and especially those smaller companies with fewer means at their disposal, a roadmap so that they can design, implement and improve a business continuity strategy valid for their concrete reality.

This Guide has been prepared by INTECO in collaboration with Deloitte, within the framework of a research project on the level of adoption of business continuity plans among Spanish SMEs, whose results will be published in November. Through the channels of the Observatory we will have you promptly informed.

Copies of this Guide in paper format, are available to the public at the stands that both INTECO and Deloitte have installed at ENISE4, the International Meeting on Information Security in its 2010 edition, which during these days is being held in León, and that we have been commenting on through the Observatory Blog.
