Spain: Campaign to prevent child abuse on social networks

The third national campaign to prevent child abuse starts in Castilla y León with the aim that society demands zero tolerance towards this type of violence and with the novelty that it will rely on social networks to reach new "profiles" such as children and parents.

This has been explained today to the Government delegate in Castilla y León, Miguel Alejo, representative of the Castilian-Leonese Association for the defense of children and youth OER, which will develop in the Community this campaign, which has the support of the Ministry of Health and Social Policy.

The secretary of REA Antonio Rodríguez and the vice president Marian González have detailed to Alejo this initiative that seeks to make society aware that child abuse is a social problem, it is not a private problem, and that this reality remains invisible in Spain.

Rodríguez explained to Efe that due to this invisibility, the data on child abuse that are known are the tip of the iceberg, although statistics reflect that fifty percent of children who suffer abuse are in turn abusers.

In this sense, Alejo has insisted on the need to educate against both abuse against children and against women, realities "in some way connected", in that many children who suffer abuse "learn to impose themselves with physical punishment" when they grow up.

"Education is at the epicenter," reiterated the Government delegate, who shared with the representatives of OER the importance of tackling this problem, not only of physical abuse, but also psychological before which sometimes you do not fall into the account, and that can be something as daily as putting a child for hours in front of the television.

"Child abuse is a difficult reality to look into the eyes," said Rodríguez, who has stressed the need that when these cases are seen "do not look away."

The association has even delivered to the Procurator of the Common a report on the non-compliance of the channels of the children's programming schedules.

"There is not a single culprit," summarized González, for whom the state regulations against abuse are sufficient since it is obliged to report cases
