Audio detectors identify fights in prisons

International. The surveillance of a prison is not only to prevent the escape of detainees, but also to prevent crimes that can occur in the premises of the detention center. To raise the level of security, the Worcester County Correction Center, in Massachusetts, United States, used a new audio technology to complement the institution's monitoring: intelligent aggression detection analytics. This analytics was combined with AXIS Q8414-LVS network camera, which has a high-resolution internal microphone.

The software of the company Sound Intelligence installed in the Axis video monitoring cameras gives alert 24 hours a day. When identifying a sound indicative of aggression, such as cries for help or abnormal noises, an alert is sent to the control center of the style: "Disturbance in cell # 2, check"

Despite being innovative, the solution did not compromise the institution's annual budget, as Lt. Greg Katz, technology manager for the Police Department, recounts. "Incorporating the audio analytics solution into an existing system was a very cost-effective decision. The big advantage of IP technology is the integration with a wide variety of devices."

In addition, the system installed in the Correction Center sends emergency alerts also to the smartphone of the security agents along with an image of the cell in question, so that it is possible to evaluate what is happening even before arriving at the place. This speeds up help in case of disagreements and in health care situations, for example.

In the future, the management of the Security Center, which has more than one hundred Axis IP cameras, plans to use the images with incident logs as part of a training program for new recruits. By seeing sequences of actual events, they can show how cops responded to a specific situation.
