Milestone Announces New XProtect 2016 R3 Advanced VMS

Latin America. Milestone Systems announces the new version of the XProtect VMS product suite®. XProtect® 2016 R3 is the third release of Milestone's award-winning VMS so far this year. Milestone's commitment to launch a new device pack every two months that allows interoperability with third-party cameras, coupled with the various VMS releases, make this release schedule an example for the industry of the power of the truly open software platform.

The XProtect® 2016 R3 Advanced VMS has numerous improvements, developed mainly taking into account the observations of the partner community. Milestone's commitment to the partner community is to maximize the business value of video management systems for its partners and customers. The rapid development cycle enables Milestone to meet market needs and partner demands, while maintaining the agility and responsiveness of the Milestone community.

In order to minimize the load of the disc on the recording servers, Milestone developed a new strategy for storing video in RAM before assigning the recordings to the disc. By fully utilizing the large RAM capacity in modern servers, the recorded video is saved in RAM until the VMS determines that the video needs to be recorded on slower mechanical discs. In systems that do not use this technology the video is always recorded on the disc regardless of whether or not it is necessary to do so. Initial tests show that savings in disk activity can reach up to 80% and even more in environments where there is little or no movement. The reduction in disc activity allows the recording server to process more cameras, be more resilient, and operate at a lower temperature. Due to the reduced disk load, less expensive disk drives can be used. Therefore, the wear and tear of disk drives is delayed thus reducing maintenance costs.

The new smart use of local camera storage is a response to the growing demand for cameras in low-bandwidth environments, whether portable cameras, occasional installations, or cameras in vehicles, trains, and airplanes. Typically, the limited bandwidth of mobile networks only allows these types of cameras to send low-resolution video, making it difficult to analyze the environment. Milestone's new feature, SVQR (Scalable High Quality Video Recording), changes this situation.

With SVQR, a low-bandwidth connection can be used to send low-resolution video to a command  center for real-time environmental reconnaissance. When cameras are connected to a high-bandwidth network, high-quality recordings can be retrieved from the cameras' local storage via the XProtect® VMS 2016 R3 Advanced VMS (per event or schedule or manually). This means that the SVQR feature enhances evidence research as well as real-time environmental recognition, offering added value to the Milestone community.
