Mexico. According to data from AI27, in 2025 groceries will continue to be the most stolen merchandise in cargo transport in Mexico, maintaining the historical trend recorded by the company.
The company reported that, in January alone, 37% of stolen products belonged to this category.
Second, wines and spirits are expected to continue to be a frequent target for criminals, while wire and steel will occupy third place on the list of goods most coveted by organized crime.
"The persistence in grocery theft is mainly due to the ease with which these products can be sold on the black market. The high demand for these goods allows thieves to introduce them into informal commerce without raising suspicions about their origin," explained Raúl Betancourt, director of Data Science at AI27.
AI27 also points out that, in the last two years, the months with the highest incidence of robberies have been June and November, with rates of 9.6% and 9.5%, respectively, followed by March with 8.7%. In particular, June 2024 was the month with the most robberies, reaching 10.2%, while in 2023 November led with 10.8%.
"We see an increase in robberies during holiday periods, holidays, and commercial events such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday in November. These times represent opportunities for criminals due to the increase in the movement of goods and the lack of surveillance on certain routes," Betancourt said.
According to AI27, a 100% Mexican company specializing in the protection of cargo transport through Artificial Intelligence (AI), grocery theft has a significant impact on the economy and directly affects the end consumer. According to their data, when this crime increases for three consecutive months, the prices of these products can rise by up to 7.64%.
For this reason, AI27 continues to be committed to the development of AI-based solutions to predict and mitigate risks on the country's main roads, with the aim of protecting both companies and consumers from the adverse effects of these crimes.
"Cargo theft has been a constant, but with AI, continuous monitoring and real-time data analysis, we can face this problem. At AI27 we know that the most valuable thing for criminals is time, and thanks to these technological tools we are one step ahead to prevent and act," concluded Betancourt.
