Mexico. In the first half of 2024, Jalisco was one of the states with the most highway robberies. According to the company AI27, AI was key to thwarting a recent robbery attempt involving about five people.
The company reported that an operator was driving on its usual route from Toluca to Guadalajara. After passing the Ocotlán toll booth, he observed two trucks parked on the side of the road. Seconds later, these cars began to follow him to block his way. As he advanced, he was overtaken by one of the trucks in which at least five hooded men were, while the second vehicle involved accelerated to prevent the passage of the tractor from the front.
"Once the trucks blocked the road, two of the criminals entered the unit and began to question me in an intimidating way if I had any kind of custody or if someone was monitoring the trip to which I replied no, later they forced me to continue driving under their orders," said the affected operator.
In the first half of this year, Jalisco was the third state where the most robberies of carriers were registered. The entity accumulated 8.6% of the total of these crimes committed in the country, according to figures from AI27, a company that provides security to cargo transport through Artificial Intelligence.
Once at the AI27 Monitoring Center, the transport emergency was detonated and the status of the unit was elevated to theft in progress, the Reaction Center of the same AI theft prevention company was contacted. The situation became critical when the criminals began to hit the visible camera inside the mobile unit in order to eliminate any evidence of the crime that was being committed. However, they did not anticipate that the unit had the protection of AI27 and thanks to the monitoring team detecting the emergency, the engine of the unit was ordered to stop. This action was key for the tractor to stop a few meters in front of where the criminals intercepted it.
State authorities and elements of the company's custody were deployed in the area. Noticing that the truck could not continue its journey, they decided to tie up and beat the driver, and then abandon him along with the unit, putting aside their robbery plans.
"The engine shutdown ordered by the AI27 team was the key action that thwarted the robbery. By stopping the vehicle in a controlled manner, the criminals were prevented from taking the tractor and the cargo. In addition, the company's ability to send real-time alerts allowed immediate action to be taken to ensure driver and vehicle integrity," said Raul Betancourt, Director of Data Science at AI27.
The AI27 algorithm not only monitors the vehicle's journey in real time, but is also able to detect anomalies such as interference with safety systems or the use of signal jammers, thus ensuring the driver's safety at all times.
"What happened is a clear example that every day crime is more organized to commit a crime, it also has the security measures that are taken to protect transport very much in mind, which reaffirms the need to have advanced technology, such as the AI27 Artificial Intelligence algorithm, that can anticipate and mitigate these risks," Raúl Betancourt concluded.
