Guayaquil Airport implements AI-powered video security

Aeropuerto de Guayaquil implementa video seguridad impulsada por IA

Ecuador. The new air terminal security scheme includes cameras, analytics and access control to help improve the safety and well-being of passengers, staff and air operations.

Terminal Aeroportuaria de Guayaquil S.A, TAGSA, which manages the José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport, has chosen Motorola Solutions' Avigilon Unity video security and access control solution to support safer and more efficient operations. The AI-based on-premise security platform simplifies video management and access control across multiple facilities and enables security personnel to share video clips more easily to improve situational awareness and collaboration.

With its 180 hectares of surface area and an average of 4 million passengers per year, Guayaquil airport plays a crucial role as an international air traffic terminal connecting Ecuador with more than 15 international destinations. Avigilon Unity was chosen to help mitigate security threats common to international airports around the world, from petty theft and robbery to organized crime and terrorism.

"Technology is of vital importance to maintain the high standards of service that have always characterized the Guayaquil airport and to keep our passengers, staff and air operations safe," said Ángel Córdova, general manager of TAGSA. "With our new video management and access control solution, we have been able to extend security to areas that were previously uncovered, while adding capabilities that allow our security staff to make more informed and efficient decisions."

Motorola Solutions' Avigilon security cameras have been strategically installed throughout the airport to provide security personnel with visibility into critical locations. Video analytics can detect and notify staff of anomalies that could indicate unusual activity in crowds, unauthorized access to restricted areas, and other security threats, such as unattended luggage.

Thermal cameras have also been installed in large areas of the airport to improve night-time visibility. These high-performance cameras can cover wide areas, detect unusual movements, and locate potential intruders in restricted areas based on their thermal characteristics. This has significantly strengthened security and detection capabilities in critical areas with poor lighting.

"With Avigilon Unity, Guayaquil Airport security personnel can more quickly and efficiently search and analyze live and recorded video," said Ulises Gomez, MSSSI vice president and director of Sales, Video Security & Access Control Motorola Solutions Latin America. "This allows them to better detect, respond to, and investigate incidents as they unfold, increasing safety and security throughout the terminal and airport operations."
