Biometrics for the protection of sports complexes: a success story

Biometría para protección de complejos deportivos

Brazil. A flexible solution based on facial recognition from SCATI has proven its effectiveness in protecting the facilities of the most modern football stadium in Brazil.

With a capacity of more than 40,000 people, the stadium also has a training and education centre for athletes, located 15 kilometres away.

Specifically, it was necessary to control tickets and automate access, as well as prevent the entry of sanctioned fans to sports venues.

In addition, the Brazilian sports club's Marketing Department needed to obtain information about fans and partners, with the aim of applying commercial intelligence and increasing profitability.

Consequently, video surveillance systems were needed to know data related to the locations and frequencies of traffic in different areas of the facilities.

The project was designed taking into account the need for the selected system to be flexible and adaptable so that it could integrate the video surveillance equipment and devices of various manufacturers, previously installed.

After considering four of the world's leading manufacturers of video surveillance systems, the facial recognition and license plate reading solution from the manufacturer SCATI was finally chosen.

"SCATI's innovative facial recognition systems installed for one of Brazil's most important football clubs once again put its technology at the forefront and allow the club to offer a completely secure sports experience," said Fabio Faria, KAM of SCATI in Brazil.

Technical Solution
The new video surveillance system is centrally managed by SCATI's video management platforms.

These platforms incorporate Business Intelligence tools that facilitate decision-making and, in addition, allow the management of the CCTV system from anywhere and at any time, whether from a fixed or mobile device.

In addition to the existing cameras, new cameras for facial recognition and license plate reading were added, for a total of 300 cameras from different manufacturers.

More than 30 SCATI facial recognition cameras (SDLI-3601VR-EMXA8) were located at the 12 access points of the stadium and training center, but also in corridors, stadium shop and other key points.

The SDLI-3601VR-EMXA8 delivers high-resolution images in all lighting conditions, thanks to built-in infrared that illuminates up to 60 meters. Despite the large influx of people, these cameras are able to identify attendees at a rate of 60 faces per second. Thanks to this, the club can identify crowds and also conflicting fans to prevent their access.

On the other hand, in order to control vehicle access, LPR (Licence Plate Recognition) reading cameras were installed. Specifically, the SDLC-3511VR-XYM2-LPR allows all vehicle inputs and outputs to be monitored, as well as automated.

The information and images returned by the systems are stored locally through SCATI's Kraken series recording servers, designed for projects that require efficient management of hundreds of cameras (up to 256 each).

In addition, they have redundancy of their main hardware elements (storage, power supplies or network cards), to maximize uninterrupted operation in the event of possible eventualities.
