Colombia. Itagüí, a municipality that is part of the metropolitan area of Medellín, has just made a million-dollar investment to strengthen citizen security in the 20 square kilometers of its jurisdiction.
With the delivery of 300 new video surveillance cameras, the local authorities have a total of 692 devices in the town, including 67 cameras with LPR technology for license plate detection, located at all exits and entrances of the town.
Likewise, the authorities delivered a monitoring center that complies with the provisions of Decree 4666 of 2006, which regulates all Integrated Emergency and Security Systems (SIES) in the country.
It has two panels made up of 18 monitors each and 22 workstations, to which 38 community alarms are connected to 500 panic buttons distributed among merchants and community leaders, as well as 301 loudspeakers that allow citizen control.
Crime Reduction
Currently, Itagüí registers a reduction in homicides of more than 92% between 2011 and 2023. Local authorities attribute the improvement in security conditions to the implementation of technological strategies to ensure the coexistence of its nearly 300,000 inhabitants.
According to statistics from the National Police, in 2022 there was a rate of 8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. By the end of 2023, the figure dropped to 4 cases, figures that are positioned as the best in the history of the municipality.
