International. The company ONVIF introduced the Transport Layer Security (TLS) configuration add-on, designed to improve the security of communication within physical security systems.
Using the plug-in allows a video management system to set or update TLS settings on a compatible device, such as a camera, to support encrypted communications between the device and software clients.
"The importance of cybersecurity is growing and the use of TLS as a foundational layer for cyber resilience is a foundation", said Leo Levit, executive at ONVIF. "With this new add-on, end users and system integrators can continue to combine products from different vendors while enjoying a standard way to configure TLS to enhance security".
Difference between profile and add-on
ONVIF profiles are sets of fixed and permanent characteristics that allow you to develop a product with functionalities only within that profile. In contrast, plugins support new versions to accommodate new technology updates or additions.
In this way, add-ons enable features that respond to specific use cases or solve an end-user need that is not yet covered by an ONVIF profile. In addition, since they represent a new category of specifications that complement a certain profile, they allow manufacturers to expand their compatibility to include new functionalities.
