Cyberattack on system servers that deal with emergencies and security incidents in Medellín

Ciberataque a servidores

Colombia. The Secretariat of Security and Coexistence of the city of Medellín, confirmed that the dispatch servers of the Integrated Emergency and Security System (SIESM) would have been the victim of a cyber attack on February 1.

Through its social networks, the secretariat shared an official statement where it reported the scope of what happened, although there was no information on the possible source of the attack.

In general, the document explains that they managed to overcome and repel the onslaught "without affecting at any time the functioning of the city's security and emergency agencies." In addition, he pointed out that it was thanks to the latest technology and protection shields that the cyber attack did not affect the work of reception, attention and reaction of emergencies in the city, which are received by the telephone line 123.

Finally, it is indicated that the corresponding authorities are open to the investigation to rule on more details about the event, including establishing those responsible for it.

Scope of attack
We contacted Stephen Arboleda, press officer of the Secretary of Security and Coexistence, who told us (on February 3) that the Malware had already been detected, all the impasse overcome, but that there were no major news regarding the information exposed in the statement.

In contrast, a well-known local media said that "although this attack did not turn off the 3,000 cameras that exist throughout the city, it did hinder its operation, preventing, for example, making approaches or delaying them." These cameras are used by the Siesm to corroborate in real time the state of the city, especially to meet the requests made by the emergency line, hence the importance of its proper operation.
