NetApp delivered 5 technology predictions for 2023

predicciones tecnológicas para 2023

International. Multicloud, technological complexity, sustainability, cyber resilience and quantum hybrid computing, are the 5 technological trends that, according to NetApp, will be a trend in 2023.

According to the company, last year (2022) gave way to the consolidation of business strategy and innovation by technology companies. But, despite this more dynamic panorama, the market was enveloped by inflation, the energy crisis and war, among other events, which mean that great efforts must continue to be made to grow.

And in that sense, this 2023 and the coming years "will be decisive for various companies, not only in the technology sector." Cloud computing is and will continue to be a fundamental pillar on which the digital environments of companies are based.

With a trend in which on-premises environments have migrated from using public cloud services, to building private clouds; moving from traditional disk to flash storage in data centers, sometimes simultaneously.

NetApp said that "investment in the cloud will increase in 2023, and cloud will continue to play a critical role as the foundation of transformation. In addition, the involvement of technology providers with sustainable development will be the main factor that will mark technology purchasing decisions."

The company said suppliers "will have to offer zero-emission, modern and efficient technologies to get customers increasingly interested in their business models."

NetApp's Top Predictions for 2023

1. Multicloud future: Rapid adoption of multiple clouds will be the epicenter of decisions. "In fact, 89% of enterprises already use multiple clouds to manage IT services, operations and infrastructures." According to NetApp, "multicloud will increase in importance as more services move from on-premises to the cloud."

2. There will be greater technological complexity: this requires teams to be prepared, acquiring the necessary knowledge and training to manage all kinds of digital tasks. "The current situation is far from the needs of companies, there is a skills gap that must be filled. It's hard to find talent that can work deftly in a single cloud. Creating teams trained to manage multiple clouds becomes a major challenge and can take long periods of time to develop."

3. Sustainability will become increasingly relevant: this especially for IT buyers, who will need more data to back up their suppliers' claims. For NetApp, "suppliers will have to demonstrate that they are working with (and achieving) greater sustainability along their entire value chain and offering product features that enable sustainability."
The company said that "if we take into account that 68 % of the data is used once and never again, we can understand that moving this unused data to the cloud, where it can be classified and moved to cold storage, is beneficial for the planet."

4. Cyber recilience will be crucial: the current challenges in health, economy and war, make detection, protection and remediation the watchwords of cybersecurity in 2023.

NetApp reported that "businesses and organizations will rely more than ever on computing resources to protect their data 24 hours a day and recover it quickly. This is because the question is no longer whether they will be attacked, but when and how often, so it is necessary to address the problem head-on. [...] Before, a company's cyber defense strategy focused on anticipating the attack, but today it's more about reacting during the attack and recovering quickly after it."

5. Quantum hybrid computing will move to the practical application phase: This advance will also force improvements in cybersecurity. "We'll start to see a mix of traditional and quantum HPC to solve some of these more complex problems," but it will also mean that cybercriminals will become more sophisticated, and this will mean that companies need to be just as sophisticated when it comes to their security measures.

Finally, NetApp emphasized to reflect "much more carefully on how we protect data today, from simple data theft to more advanced encryption and decryption techniques." For the company, the quantum hybrid will be able to break existing encryption protocols in less than a decade, so new protocols and encryption algorithms can be developed sooner.
