Guayaquil on track to have a video surveillance system with 41,300 cameras

Guayaquil sube número de cámaras de videovigilancia

Ecuador. The mayor of Guayaquil, Ecuador's important port city, confirmed the plan to grow the city's video surveillance system to 41,300 cameras.

The investment in expanding video surveillance equipment is due to reduce attacks by common crime and organized crime.

According to Mayor Cynthia Viteri, the new video surveillance system covers 3,720 points of the city, installing in each one four cameras, where one can rotate or be mobile, to give a better viewing angle.

Likewise, the mayor said in an interview with Radio Sucre that: "the people of Guayaquil are currently putting 15,000 more cameras in the city, we already have 4,000 these are added to the existing 2,000 for a total of 17,000. This puts us globally as one of the cities, per person, for the protection and prevention of crime."

Finally, and to understand this measure, it is necessary to emphasize that Guayaquil was named for the first time in the ranking of the most dangerous cities in the world, of the Insight Crime portal. That organization called its entry inevitable.

"In 2021, Ecuador increased its homicide rate faster than any other country in Latin America and the Caribbean. Murders nearly doubled year after year as gang warfare spiraled out of control."
