Guide to Ensuring Security and Expanding Cloud Infrastructure

Mexico. Comstor released guidance to ensure security and expand cloud infrastructure.

Although many organizations are deploying cloud infrastructure, there is still some degree of skepticism regarding its security. According to a study conducted by the SANS Institute, 40% of the organizations evaluated have said that unauthorized access to confidential data of other customers was the biggest concern with the implementation of Public Clouds. Another 33% have reported that they currently do not have sufficient visibility into the operations of their public cloud providers.

Do you share similar concerns? How can you deal with them or at least minimize them?

When we consider how quickly an organization can set up multiple systems on a cloud infrastructure, the security of those systems must be considered in the foreground. Having the flexibility to deploy, disassemble and redistribute systems quickly is important, but how will your company protect them?

Cloud Solutions for Any Deployment Model
To successfully create and deliver cloud services, you need a global view of how applications, infrastructure, automotive, people and processes interact. IT departments can offer private cloud services using the Cisco Unified Data Center, which unites compute, network, automotive and organization in an agile, efficient and simplified platform in physical and virtual environments.

In addition, service providers can create new revenue streams, offering infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions based on the Unified Data Center and the Cloud Intelligent Network.

Industry changes are redefining IT at all levels. On-premises IT consumption models are migrating to cloud-based services. IT as a Service (ITaaS) is giving way to applications as a service. Development and operations, previously separate elements, are moving towards integration (DevOps). Device-centric management models are migrating to application-centric management.

Business dynamism requires application dynamism. Therefore, IT teams must provision applications in hours instead of months. You should increase (or decrease) the scale of resources in minutes, not hours.

Traditional strategies use a fragmented operational approach, without a common operating model across application, networking, and cloud teams. A common operating model delivers application agility, simplified operations, guaranteed performance, and scalability.

Cisco ACI: Agile, Open and Secure
Cisco Application-Centric Infrastructure (ACI) is an architecture that encompasses SDNs. That automotive solution supports a language based on business-relevant application policies, greater scale in a distributed application system, and greater network visibility. These benefits are achieved through the integration of physical resources and virtual environments under a policy model for networks, servers, storage, services and security.

Security
Cisco ACI and the APIC SDN controller enable security policies down to the individual customer, application, or workload. They provide protection that meets the strictest business and compliance requirements. The permission list model provides for communication only when explicitly permitted, helping to ensure that policy omissions do not leave security vulnerabilities.

Through Cisco ACI, all devices and security appliance configurations can be automated according to centrally managed policies and application requirements. This simplifies IT security tasks (including PCI compliance) and accelerates application deployments.

Highly secure multi-client environments is another important point of the solution. This is because it allows to offer insulation and SLA appropriate for different clients; while maintaining a consistent security policy between physical and virtual applications. Data center teams define network and security policies using a common language abstraction for policies. This helps security teams provide robust policy definitions regardless of network topology.

It is also essential to highlight the point of Extensibility and openness of infrastructure, once the ACI supports the Cisco Open Network Environment (ONE) strategy, and adopts open APIs, open source and open standards. This offers the broadest options for data center infrastructure and management.

A well-documented set of upstream and downstream traffic APIs, available through the Cisco Developer Network, enables rapid integration and system flexibility to:

  • Layer 4 – 7 services
  • Virtual Network Infrastructure
  • Supervision
  • Administration
  • Organizational Services
  • Investment protection - people and infrastructure
  • Leverage the existing infrastructure and skill set in your IT team to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO).

In addition, innovative 40 Gb bidirectional optical technology allows existing 10 Gb cabling to be reused to reduce costly fiber upgrades. Customers can use Cisco Nexus 9000 switches in standalone deployments or migrate to full ACI fiber mode with a software update. This approach, combined with open interfaces to support existing infrastructure, offers investment protection across the portfolio.

In conclusion: Cloud infrastructure remains a phenomenal and unprecedented technology to expand and adjust your environment flexibly. However, you should pay extra attention to safety during implantation to ensure continued protection during growth.
