Milestone and Intel Team Up to Optimize Video Data Transmission

International. Milestone Systems' XProtect® 2016 software leverages Intel® Quick Sync Video technology to achieve more than 80% savings in information flow for the security industry.

An increasing number of security installations are employing support for cameras with 4K UHD (ultra high definition) resolution. To monitor large environments, such as cities, essential utilities and heavy traffic environments, etc., cameras with 4K UHD resolution cover larger areas, while offering a high degree of detail when making large zooms in images. Although the image is displayed on a relatively small screen, the ultra HD 4k resolution video stream allows the operator to zoom in on a specific area of interest without sacrificing image quality on the monitor. Details become clearer and problems can be solved more easily.

However, many video surveillance managers do not realize the enormous burden on their networks – and the high performance compromise of their video system – the use of higher resolution cameras. Such high-capacity devices place greater demands on video management software (VMS), seriously affecting the otherwise smooth transmission quality of display screens. The responsiveness to an incident deteriorates when the quality of the visualization decreases.

It is critical that video management software and its customers can decode and play multiple 4K ultra HD resolution cameras at the standard playback speed of 25/30 frames per second, as Milestone's XProtect® 2016 software currently does, thanks to the integration of Intel® Quick Sync Video technology.

Milestone Systems has evolved with the launch of its XProtect® 2016 software portfolio. Leveraging Intel® Quick Sync Video technology dramatically reduces the operating costs of Milestone solutions and significantly accelerates data transfer.

Computers running Intel® Quick Sync Video technology use the specialized media processing capabilities of Intel® Graphics Technology to efficiently decode video streams in the H.264 format. The latest version of Milestone's XProtect® Smart Client leverages this capability to achieve savings of more than 80 percent in processor resource utilization. Intel's® chipset and instructions decode the video stream, freeing the processor to perform other tasks.

Thanks to the increased efficiency in the performance of the video system, those who use Milestone for video surveillance can save costs on the number of workstations required. By upgrading to the XProtect® 2016 version with the XProtect® Smart Client, more high-definition (HD) cameras can be managed, improving the continuity and sharpness of video images.

In tests conducted by Milestone engineers and documented in Intel's® new white paper, the same system managed to process five times more video streams using XProtect® Smart Client 2016 with Intel's® capabilities to accelerate the equipment, compared to the 2014 version.

Milestone's 2016 XProtect® software leverages Intel® Quick Sync Video technology built into some Intel® processors to enable the smooth viewing of full HD video from up to 25 cameras simultaneously on an economy, single-connector, quad-core client PC with a next-generation Intel® Core i7 processor. That equates to playing 25 Blu-ray movies at the same time without losing a single frame.

The solution can also support multiple 4K cameras with ultra HD resolution with continuous video at 25/30 frames per second. These performance parameters make a fundamental difference in the security industry.

This means that users can upgrade an XProtect® solution to handle more cameras, without needing to purchase new equipment. On the other hand, the additional capacity could be used to process video cameras with ultra HD 4K resolution and thus improve the visualization of image details without affecting bandwidth consumption. Cheaper PCs can be used in installations with the new XProtect®, thanks to the better performance of the XProtect® Smart Client 2016.

In every aspect of Milestone's business model, partnerships are important. Milestone's goal is for this joint work to result in innovative developments that represent advances for our customers, both in terms of performance and costs. This important advance was possible thanks to the close collaboration between Intel® and Milestone, companies for which it was very positive to work together to enhance the performance of the XProtect® Smart Client.
