Mexico. The Plaza Mayor Shopping Center in Mexico implemented new Axis video surveillance and video intercom solutions for preventive security management with a focus on reducing incidents.
Mission
70% of the Shopping Centers in Latin America are located in Mexico. Founded in the 1990s, Plaza Mayor is the largest fashion mall in the Mexican Bajio, as well as one of the largest in the entire country. For the initial construction an analog CCTV security system was selected, since it was the technology that was in force and within reach at the time, it did not meet the requirements of durability and scalability, which caused the need to replace it.
The new system should hold up better over time and grow at the same time as the needs in the mall. In addition, Plaza Mayor required a system that would help manage the flow of people throughout the property, both indoors and outdoors, and in restricted areas. Finally, the system should provide peace of mind to tenants who pay for a security system that deters potential criminals and provide a rapid response to incidents with reliable video forensic evidence.
Solution
More than 200 Axis IP network video cameras are now deployed in Plaza Mayor along with a variety of video analytics. A video intercom system and emergency call buttons provide communication and pop-up response; in the second phase, an access control system will be integrated that will monitor the distributors in the property.
Constant flow monitoring
Plaza Mayor receives about 1,000 deliveries from distributors weekly, of which 40% are recurring. It has been analyzed to integrate an access control system as a way to track vehicles entering and leaving the property. Using an RFID tag and an input radio frequency reader, the system assigns time and day permissions per provider. For 60% of non-recurring providers, a web platform linked to the input system was implemented.
"A shopping center can have an avant-garde architectural design, have the best shops, impeccable cleanliness, but if the security it offers is not of the highest quality, people will stop visiting it, consequently, everything else will lose value," said Luis Morales, Head of Security at the Plaza Mayor Shopping Center.
Result
Axis' technological solution has played a fundamental role in plaza Mayor's security strategy, which has generated a considerable reduction in incidents. Working with Axis solutions not only solved their current challenges, but also allowed them to envision a future that can evolve beyond loss prevention to include operations and marketing optimization activities.
"We know that technologies like those offered by Axis Communications will allow us to remain a state-of-the-art shopping mall that also offers our customers benefits beyond security." Luis Morales, Head of Security at the Plaza Mayor Shopping Center.
What's to come
Currently, work is being done on the implementation of access control equipment to support the access management of suppliers, to protect the most sensitive areas of the shopping center where the product of all tenants is transferred.
By protecting entries and exits before, during and after business hours, granting permits and controlling the access of different suppliers to their facilities, the unauthorized extraction of goods is hindered.
To achieve this, axis A1001 network access control will be installed, which will work in conjunction with software they hope to develop in conjunction with Axis. The software will generate permissions by reading barcodes through the video intercom. The barcode will tell the access control unit whether to authorise entry or not. Restricting access to the supplier area will improve vehicle control and provide greater security everywhere.
