Genetec launches access control functionality to identify people at risk of contact with contaminants or contagion

Latin America. Genetec announced the launch of a new reporting functionality for the Security Center Synergis (Synergis) access control system, which is designed to help organizations find everyone who has passed through a door, very close to someone who is believed to be infected.

The company explains that it is possible that they may have contaminated the door handle or other surfaces, in addition to having left pollutants in the air in their wake. This report helps identify all people who are at increased risk of having had contact with contaminants or infected people. This feature will also be useful for customers handling hazardous substances and is made available to all Genetec Synergis access control customers at no cost.

Developed at the request of McCormick Place in Chicago, the largest convention center in North America, the reporting functionality correlates the physical proximity of an infected person with other registered employees and visitors, based on the use of the access control system. Thus, a report can be quickly generated to correlate access events by time interval to identify people who are at higher risk of having been in contact with contaminants or infected people. This will allow companies to proactively inform people about their possible contamination, and in this way, take the necessary hygienic forecasts, following health and safety procedures and regulations.

"With Synergis, any organization can produce a detailed report showing employee and visitor exposure metrics using existing access control information," said Thibaut Louvet, product group manager for Access Control at Genetec. "We must consider that, if two people passed through the same door in a short period, there is a good chance that they have had some level of interaction. This forensic analysis can be extremely beneficial for organizations looking to use the technology they already have to better protect their employees, visitors and the community at large."

"Our number one priority is to ensure the health and safety of our visitors and staff, so we knew we had to be prepared for any eventuality," said McCormick Place Security Systems Coordinator Brett Zelnio. "In the fight against a contagion that can easily spread through surfaces or the proximity of infected people, knowledge is our best defense to stop the spread of this type of virus. Being able to use the technology, to provide these additional metrics available through this system, is a new and critical tool."

"Nearly half of Security Center's capabilities are the result of Genetec's anticipation of what technology will be useful to our customers. The other half is the result of what our customers dream of. Typically, our customers imagine smart and innovative ways to use the system and suggest new functionality ideas. The Contaminant/Contagion Proximity Report is an example of this," said Pierre Racz, President of Genetec Inc. "A very smart member of the technical staff of one of our public infrastructure customers requested the Contaminant/Contagion Proximity Report and we were surprised by its usefulness and brilliant simplicity, so we quickly set to work for its development."
