R. Dominican. Dominican Ambassador to China Briunny Garabito Segura recently said the Dominican government plans to expand his country's facial recognition security camera system with technological devices supplied by other non-Chinese companies.
The diplomat's statement contradicts the government's stance to increase the number of Chinese-made cameras announced at the end of November.
During a reception for Dominican journalists at the embassy, Garabito Segura said this is part of a broad project where only his government will be in control. "Not only were the cameras intended for the UASD (state university), but they were cameras that would improve our security system in the Dominican Republic."
It had previously emerged that the Dominican Republic's National Emergency Service planned to purchase facial recognition cameras from various vendors to expand its surveillance system. The cameras would be donated by China, according to the report, and would be added to a system that has improved security in the country's cities since its implementation in 2014, according to a statement from the Emergency Service. The governments of the U.S. and Taiwan have provided funding and technical assistance, and Orange has provided technical assistance.
Interestingly, considering U.S. support, the report noted that the cameras were mentioned by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, indicating that they were Hikvision-branded.
