United States. The Security Industry Association (SIA) identified and forecast the 2020 Security Megatrends, which form the basis of SIA's annual Security Megatrends report that defines the top 10 factors influencing short- and long-term change in the global security industry.
The selection of 2020 Security Megatrends was based on fall 2019 focus groups and survey data collected from top security industry business leaders, association leaders, key volunteers, and speakers for the 2019 Securing New Ground (SNG) conference taking place October 29-30 at the Grand Hyatt New York in New York.
Each year, SIA produces the Security Megatrends report, which is made available to SIA member companies and registered attendees of SNG, the security industry's executive conference. Security Megatrends are the main forces at play in security, and are expected to have a major impact on businesses across the industry.
For the second year in a row, cybersecurity was identified as the predominant trend shaping the security industry and a major concern for C-suite executives, government buyers, enterprise organizations, integrators and more. Moving up the list of fifth place in SIA's Security Megatrends 2019 report to second place by 2020 was the artificial intelligence (AI) trend. Respondents pointed to the role of AI that underlies the advancement behind nearly every technological promise.
A resounding number of respondents called for facial recognition to be added as a 2020 Security Megatrend, bringing the newcomer to the number three position. Also new to the 2020 Megatrends are national security concerns and identity as the new perimeter.
The 2020 security megatrends are as follows:
- Impact of cybersecurity on physical security
- AI
- Facial recognition
- Emphasis on data privacy
- Cloud Computing
- National Security Concerns
- Connectivity and IoT all
- Workforce development
- Move to service models
- Identity as the new perimeter
