Report identifies security challenges for enterprises in public cloud environments

International. A report looking at cloud security highlights the challenges enterprise security operations teams face in protecting their data, systems and public cloud services. This study was conducted by the company Check Point Software Technologies.

Even as public cloud service providers extend their security tools to protect their platforms, it is ultimately the responsibility of customers to protect their data and applications on those platforms. According to the report's data, 15% of companies confirmed that they had suffered some security incident in the cloud, while 25% did not know if they had experienced any breaches. Only 54% of companies were able to ensure that their public cloud platforms had not been hacked.

Some of the most prominent findings of the 2019 Cloud Security Report are:
• The top four public cloud vulnerabilities: The top threats to respondents are unauthorized access (42%), insecure interfaces (42%), platform misconfigurations (40%), and account hijacking (39%).
• Top cloud operational security concerns: Security teams face a lack of visibility into cloud infrastructure security and compliance (67%). On the other hand, the establishment of coherent security policies in cloud environments and on the premises stand out in the third position, as well as the lack of qualified personnel, with 31% each.
• Legacy security tools are not designed for public clouds: 66% of respondents said their traditional security solutions don't work at all or only provide limited functionality in cloud environments.
• Security challenges delay cloud adoption: The biggest barriers to cloud adoption, according to respondents, are data security (29%), risk in engagement (28%), compliance challenges (26%), and lack of experience and skilled personnel (26%).

"The report's findings clearly show that enterprise security teams must urgently reevaluate their security strategies and address the shortcomings of their legacy tools to protect their ever-evolving public cloud environments, as well as avoid potential breaches. The fact that 15% of respondents report that they have had a cloud security incident highlights that criminals are trying to exploit the vulnerabilities of organizations in cloud environments," said Zohar Alon, director of cloud products at Check Point Software Technologies.  "Enterprises need to gain holistic visibility across all of their public cloud environments, backed by cloud-native policy automation, compliance, privileged identity protection, and event analytics, to make your cloud deployments more secure and easier to manage," adds Alon.
