ONVIF Celebrates Global Adoption and Success Milestones as Part of its 10th Anniversary

International. ONVIF, the standardization  initiative for IP-based physical security products celebrates its 10th anniversary, culminating a decade of growing growth and influence as a provider of interoperability standards to the physical security market. Starting with a small group of competitive manufacturers joining forces in 2008 and growing to 500 ONVIF member companies, it also continues to refine and promote its specifications for interoperability between security technology devices and beyond.

"We are very proud that what began simply as a common mindset 10 years ago has morphed into everything ONVIF has become: a dynamic, member-driven organization dedicated to enabling interoperability and end-user freedom of choice to select products from a variety of different security technology vendors." said Per Björkdahl, Chairman, Steering Committee of ONVIF. "Our official recognition and global adoption by the international standardization community, our ultimate achievement, is a testament to the work of our volunteer leaders and the member companies behind us, and a reflection of our prominence as today's leading interoperability standard in physical security."

ONVIF was founded as a technical alliance between Axis Communications, Sony and Bosch Security and Safety Systems and today has nearly 10,000 compatible products and a member base spanning six continents and 39 countries. ONVIF specifications have been adopted by global standards bodies such as the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and Cenelec, and are increasingly applicable to growing security and connectivity environments, such as Safe Cities initiatives, Internet of Things (IoT) applications and smart building automation.

The alliance's six profiles cover the fundamental functions used in IP-based video surveillance and access control systems, as well as a growing list of more sophisticated functionalities demanded by the market. The S profile, for video configuration and streaming, as well as panning, tilt and zoom (PTZ), audio, multicast and streaming outputs to support compatible clients and devices, was the first ONVIF profile to be released and remains the most widely used profile in the market today.
