Mexico. Expo Seguridad carried out an analysis of the situation through Mario Arroyo, spokesman for the event and rector of the Ibero-American Institute of Security Leadership.
In order to deal with the growing insecurity in Mexico, the national government allocated through its different dependencies an item of 10 billion dollars (219 billion Mexican pesos), which makes this year a key period for the security industry in the country. This is clear from the most recent webinar "Government Security Budget in Mexico: Rules and Opportunities in 2018", offered by the specialist in public policy and security Mario Arroyo Juárez.
The expert, who is also the spokesman for Expo Seguridad Mexico, mentioned that in addition to Mexico, several of the countries in the region began this year with negative news in terms of security and commented, for example, on the recent attacks against police in Ecuador and Colombia, in addition to the deterioration and laxity of preventive policies in regions such as Brazil and Argentina.
In that sense, Mario Arroyo suggested that the public sectors establish investment plans in security matters, in order to prevent the resources allocated by the government from being used in inefficient projects. "It is not for lack of resources, what must be done is to allocate these funds intelligently, this means better targeting spending, imposing controls, objectives and indicators, eliminating waste and especially, fighting corruption," he said.
Specifically for this year, the Public Security Contribution Fund (FASP) received 7 billion Mexican pesos for the country's federal entities; the Strengthening For Security Program (FORTASEG) will have 5 billion Mexican pesos that it can use, for example, in technologies, equipment and infrastructure for security; and the Contribution Fund for the Strengthening of Municipalities (FORTAMUN) will have almost 15 billion Mexican pesos to support security initiatives in different municipalities and the 16 delegations of the Federal District.
The solution for the security situation in Mexico, according to Mario, is to generate new models of knowledge, information and communication that improve security actions, in addition to having an information system that is timely and that allows data mining and auditing.
In order for this to be possible, the expert said that it is necessary to have a vigilant and proactive society, where the federal and municipal governments actively participate in the improvement of the country's security.
