Learn what it is and how to prevent an electric arc

Colombia. Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management and energy efficiency, invites you to learn about the importance of using internal arc protection relays, capable of preventing explosions of more than 20,000ºC (electric arcs), which can affect human life and cause serious damage to your electrical installations.

An electric arc is an electric discharge through a gaseous medium (e.g. air) that can be caused by technical failures such as damage to insulators; lack of maintenance leading to accumulation of conductive dust and corrosion; or also by human errors such as forgetting tools during maintenance and improper maneuvers.

This phenomenon produces a large release of thermal energy, toxic gases, shrapnel and pressure waves. Its effects can range from the destruction of electrical installations and equipment, to putting the integrity of people at risk, among others.

In order to prevent this type of emergency, Schneider Electric will hold next Wednesday, July 12, the virtual talk: "Internal arc protection relays" in two sessions scheduled at 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., this space is aimed at managers and maintenance operators, project engineers, standardization engineers, electricians, electrical engineering students, and in general, all people associated with market segments focused on electrifiers, water treatment plants, oil and gas and mining with the interest of learning to minimize the risks that any type of electrical installation can cause with the help of this device.

This virtual class will feature the following topics:

  • What is it and how is an electric arc produced?
  • Effects of the electric arc on people and substations.
  • Regulations that exist for the protection of the internal arch in medium and low voltage.
  • Advantages and solutions that Schneider Electric offers to prevent internal electric arc.

The speaker will be Milthon Montenegro, an electrical engineer with 14 years of experience in the energy industry. Currently at Schneider Electric, he works as an Application Engineer at the Energy Applications Center for Andean Cluster (Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru and Bolivia). His expertise and knowledge during his professional career have focused on topics such as power systems, protective equipment and power quality.
