Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G networks

Latin America. F5 Networks announced the availability of its high-performance, high-performance, communications-class scalable firewall focused on providing comprehensive security in service provider networks. The firewall supports a maximum of 1.2 billion concurrent connections and more than 20 million connections per second.

The announcement is aligned with a commitment to expand its portfolio of dedicated security solutions. F5's communications-like-class firewall is designed to address security concerns around the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), migration to 5G and NFV networks, as well as increased security vulnerabilities affecting devices, networks and applications.

"Today service providers are responding to the exponential growth of subscribers, data, devices and the Internet of Things by architecturally redesigning their networks and ensuring they can scale."

"These are significant challenges when it comes to protecting the security of these networks. F5's security solutions protect service provider networks from attacks, making the security of subscribers, devices and core network elements such as the Gi LAN and the data center possible," said Mallik Tatipamula, vice president of service provider solutions at F5.

Complete and integrated portfolio of security solutions

Service providers' core networks face threats from multiple points (devices, networks, and applications), while network attacks also impact DNS, control plane, and signaling (including SIP and Diameter).

F5's consolidated portfolio of L4-L7 services, including CGNAT integration, provides comprehensive security and provides a multi-layered solution to protect the application, control plane and data plane against APTs and DDoS attacks. This allows service providers to protect their brand and retain customers by improving the Quality of Experience of their subscribers while shielding their network for the future as their network architectures evolve.

Massive scale and performance with the lowest total cost of ownership

5G networks have ultra-low latency features to handle the growth associated with IoT. To protect future networks, service providers need to increase the agility, performance, and security of the Gi LAN. F5 offers service providers powerful performance solutions that can scale on concurrent connections and connections per second (CPS) to meet the requirements of 5G and IoT networks.

A recent study by independent research firm ACG revealed that F5's communications-like-class firewall (based on VIPRION® 4800) recorded up to 80% lower total cost of ownership than workarounds while providing a 216% higher return on investment.

"The relentless rapid growth in the number of users, devices and applications on mobile networks creates a need for operator security solutions to scale efficiently on a similar trajectory. This applies to all operating planes and all application areas," said Paul Parker-Johnson, principal analyst at ACG Research.

A central element in achieving these goals is the class firewall similar to that of communications companies on the Gi LAN. The scale of the firewall in multiple dimensions (number of concurrent sessions, connection configurations per second, and performance) is critical."

F5 has skillfully achieved a balance of capabilities in its communications-class firewall that provides superior performance in each of these important dimensions of the Gi LAN with an attractive economic return."

The autonomous firewall of a class similar to that of communications companies will be available in the third quarter of calendar year 2016. Please contact a local F5 sales office for additional information and information on product availability in specific countries.
