UL Announces New Collaboration with Latin American Safety Association

Brazil. UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a global safety science organization announces collaboration with ALAS (Latin American Safety Association International, Inc.), a respected organization in the security industry.

ALAS is a non-profit corporation headquartered in Miami, Florida, that promotes the growth and professionalization of the security industry through education, research, networking and standards development. Together, UL and ALAS will work to develop standards and certification programs for security products, systems and services in the Latin American market. A collaboration between UL and WINGS will help both organizations leverage their strengths to develop stronger certification standards and processes across Latin America.

"We chose to collaborate with WINGS because we share the same value: driving innovation and promoting safety and security," said Neil Lakomiak, director of business development for Building Technologies and Life Safety. "We believe this link will help us work more closely with the security industry at a time of increasing supply chain complexities and technological changes occurring at a faster pace. The link with ALAS expresses UL's commitment to continue investing in the security market in Latin America by helping to facilitate market-driven standards and certification programs for products, systems and services."

Alberto Alvarez, CEO of ALAS said: "This collaboration brings together WINGS' extensive knowledge of the Latin American market with UL's expertise in certification in order to address the growing industry-wide need for certification. Together they can improve products, systems and services to help manufacturers and end users achieve higher levels of product confidence – an indispensable attribute for competing in the global marketplace."

As standards development increases and expands, so will product safety, so will safety products. And as UL and ALAS work together, more certified safety products will need to enter the market, which will benefit manufacturers, users and consumers alike.

UL has expanded its operations in Latin America. In the last two years, UL grew in Brazil by approximately 35% through the development of new services and the scope of INMETRO accreditation for new areas, which allows the company to support more industries. The employee base in Brazil also grew, from 100 to nearly 250 since 2012. UL is opening offices in Colombia and continues to expand throughout the region.
