Video surveillance increased security in Uruguay

Uruguay. The installation of the network of video surveillance cameras in the areas with the highest influx of passers-by "has facilitated the work of the police to the extent that it complements the operational work of the official."

Likewise, the implementation of technological tools allows to obtain a "better patrol system", assures from the Ministry of the Interior.

The cameras record 24 hours a day, which allows to detect an event in real time as well as "track" in the database to recover information necessary for the police and be able to provide the necessary evidentiary elements to the judge.

The head of the Directorate of Unified Command Center of the Ministry of the Interior, Inspector Robert Taroco, said that "there are more defendants in places where there is a video surveillance system.

"The numbers prove it: the first year in the Old City there were a total of 96 defendants while in the first half of 2015, the figure increased to 144," said the hierarch.

He added that it can be concluded that "there was no displacement of crime to other areas, but a greater effectiveness and a better result of the work that is done."

In Montevideo there are security cameras in Ciudad Vieja, Centro, Corredor Río Branco, Cordón, Unión and Paso Molino.

On the other hand, the Unified Command Center works together with the police headquarters and the departmental intendencies to ensure that each city has its own video surveillance system.

While the departments and / or cities that already have this operating system are: Maldonado, Treinta y Tres, Lavalleja, Rivera, Salto, Colonia, Las Piedras, San José, Durazno, Sarandí Grande and Tacuarembó.

Likewise, the Ministry of the Interior works with the police chiefs of the departments where cameras still need to be installed, in order to implement the system.
