International. Integrating biometric capabilities into smartphones and tablets is becoming increasingly common for personal identification and authentication apps. A variety of biometric modalities will be employed in the coming years, including voice, facial and iris recognition. The modality that must prevail far above the others is the recognition of fingerprints using fingerprint readers incorporated into the devices, indicates a recent report by Tractica.
The market research firm forecasts that sales of fingerprint readers embedded in mobile devices will surpass 1 billion units annually in 2021, accounting for 34% of global sales of all phones and tablets by that year. In some regions service fees will be much higher – in North America, for example, where Tractica predicts it will be the region with the highest adoption of fingerprint readers, 51% of all mobile devices will include those sensors by 2021.
"Currently, mobile fingerprint reader use cases focus on basic authentication for local device access and purchase transactions with the device," says Principal Analyst Bob Lockhart. "However, as market penetration rates increase in the future, the market will expand to include a variety of additional use cases for identification and authentication for banking and financial transactions, government identification, and healthcare applications, among others."
