Uruguay. In December 2013 the Ministry of the Interior inaugurated the first surveillance cameras in Ciudad Vieja, Centro and Cordón.
Soon after, the system was extended to other busy parts of the city and to the interior of the country.
There are already 1,100 operational cameras and 100 police officers working on their monitoring.
The evaluation of the first year yielded positive results. In the neighborhoods where the police cameras were installed, the number of robberies and robberies decreased.
There were 115 criminals prosecuted in 12 months under this system, but the authorities demand that more and more the Justice take as evidence the images captured by the Police.
The goal of the Ministry of the Interior is to install cameras throughout the country. There are already in Treinta y Tres, Colonia, Paysandú, Salto, Rivera, Lavalleja and Maldonado, and work is being done to inaugurate the system as soon as possible in Tacuarembó, Durazno, Rocha, Artigas and Cerro Largo.
