Peru. The Municipality of Lima reported that the video surveillance camera system has not worked since December 8 because the previous administration, headed by former mayor Susana Villarán, did not comply with making the payment to the company in charge of providing the service.
In a visit to the Citizen Security monitoring center on the Vía Evitamiento, the mayor of Lima, Luis Castañeda, found that the 41 surveillance cameras were off, as were the monitors.
"Unfortunately we do not have the service because the previous management did not cancel the service it provides to the company," said Noemi Sanchez, monitoring supervisor to local media during the inspection.
"It is incredible that our Lima is at the mercy of insecurity, crime and chaos due to the negligence and ineffectiveness of officials of the previous administration," Castañeda said.
Likewise, the municipality reported that nine serenity patrol cars, 17 motorcycles and nine personnel service trucks were found in the Citizen Security warehouses, as well as unfinished infrastructure works.
The municipality would have to pay 481 million soles (about US$160 million) for judicial proceedings. In addition, a payment of 107 million soles (about US$35 million) to the concessionaires of the Metropolitano.
