SMEs: with the possibility of better storage for their information and data

altMexico. Imation has realized the need, which since mid-2012 has increased – as predictions about storage trends have come true. Topics such as: "Big Data" deduplication, storage efficiency, private clouds, among other technological terms and procedures, have been a constant in the field of large companies.

But what about Small and Medium Enterprises? Simply in Mexico, most business engines belong to the small segment (micro, small and medium); since of the 5 million 144 thousand 056 companies registered by the INEGI in the economic censuses of 2010, 95.2% are micro enterprises, 4.3% are small, 0.3% are medium and the remaining 0.2% are large firms.

Once that majority is determined, specific concerns can be deduced; these include: establishing an enterprise-class storage infrastructure at an affordable price that is scalable and efficient; since in the past for these companies to be able to implement a network-attached storage system (NAS), or a scheme with intelligence through software -which moved their information in different layers to optimize expenses, using hard drives and magnetic tapes-, was practically impossible due to the low budgets allocated for these items, which definitely did not allow to acquire high-end solutions from the big manufacturers of storage solutions.

Today, thanks to the emergence of storage manufacturers dedicated to this segment (disk hardware and magnetic tape with backup software), the so-called SMEs, Small and Medium Businesses, can forget external hard drives, USB's or the special enablement for a file server managed with old hardware, which is surely in disuse.

In return, they can implement a layered scheme, which can include: a NAS appliance, with 10 TB SATA hard drive, an LTO magnetic tape drive and software that automates backup tasks for a couple of servers. Thus performing the movement of information by layers, optimizing the total cost of ownership. This type of solution can be purchased with an initial investment ranging from 8 thousand dollars.

This allows small and medium-sized companies to be included in that group of end users that can be set as a next step to implement a trend solution such as: deduplication or historical archiving, which would optimize the protection of the most important asset its information.
