Mexico. 21 cameras currently ensure the security of the historic center of the city of León. The implementation of the video surveillance system in February 2010 has meant important benefits for the heritage and security of the area and the City Council is committed to its expansion and plans to request this month the authorization to be able to place three new cameras.
The squares of San Martín and Torres de Omaña and the upper part of Ancha Street are points where these new devices would be installed, according to the Councilor for Police, Ricardo Gavilanes.
The heart of the Barrio Húmedo is the high priority of the expansion of the video surveillance system due to the significant number of vandalism and criminal acts that are registered in this area mainly at night.
The system began its activity two and a half years ago with 20 cameras located in areas such as San Marcelo, Conde Luna, the Cathedral, San Isidoro, Plaza Mayor, Las Cercas, Puerta Obispo, and Plaza del Grano.
In 2011 a new camera came into operation, which is located in the Plaza de Santo Martino. The project initially proposed contemplated the installation of 28 cameras of which 20 received the authorization of the Commission of Guarantees of Video Surveillance. After obtaining a year later that of Santo Martino, it is now wanted to achieve permission to place three others that did not obtain it at that time.
To achieve this, reports have been prepared to reflect the high rate of vandalism (graffiti and destruction of street furniture mainly) and criminal acts. The objective is that the Commission of Guarantees of CcTV allows the placement of the cameras. The authorization is based on deciding whether security or the right to privacy prevails in certain areas. That's why there are cameras that can only record at certain times.
