Brazil. One of the largest private banks in Latin America has included Lumidigm multispectral fingerprint readers in its ATM network in Brazil.
Lumidigm is working with Itautec, a Brazilian IT service provider, to install the first 12,000 units of the 33,000 ATM network. Readers not only provide customers with secure access to their accounts, but will also ensure that each person has only one identity.
Lumidig biometric readers can read dry, wet damaged or dirty finger prints, a critical aspect for a reader who most likely won't have someone available to solve problems in case a fingerprint can't be read.
With these readers, a fingerprint will now serve as a PIN. Itautec ATMs are not the first to implement this option. Large banks in other parts of the world, such as South Africa, are also implementing methods for the use of fingerprints as PINs for ATMs.
Itautec's ATM system was exhibited at the CIAB trade fair in Sao Paulo in June this year.
