Mexico. Last June, the company SMC was in charge of ensuring the security of the Second Presidential Debate, an event that was broadcast by the main television networks in Mexico.
The importance of this act required the connection of 180 computers through a local area network (LAN), to ensure reliability, a secure and robust equipment was needed to maintain a stable and fluid connection.
In this case, the SMC brand opted for the implementation of the GIGABIT Managed Switch (SMC8024L2). Thus, by means of a star/tree topology; every 20 computers were connected to an Access Switch which in turn connected directly to the Central Switch, which receives an internet connection from the router.
One of the coordinators of the start-up of the LAN network, engineer Francisco Rodríguez, said that "we were looking for advice and support for a successful integration, also a brand that had within its product lines with high performance, reliable and robust equipment".
The metal chassis switch used, has 20 RJ45 ports and 4 RJ45/SFP combo ports. This allows it to support high demand applications in traffic, being able to reach 48Gbps with non-blocking architecture.
It also offers quality of service (QoS) with four priority levels. With these features this system ensures the transmission of critical data; VLANs based on tags or ports, Multiple Spanning Tree that provide detection and prevention of Loops in the network, LACP to increase the bandwidth between links. In addition, security is protected by systems such as 802.1x and IP filtering.
