Spain. In May, the ABS System – Automatic Border Control – of the airports of Barcelona El Prat and Madrid Barajas was inaugurated, which provides the identification and verification of the documents of travelers at border posts, supervised by the police. The ABC System consists of identification modules, access and an assisted control post, which verifies the data of passengers who are citizens of the European Union, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland, over 18 years of age and who have an electronic passport or DNI-e (National Electronic Identity Document).
In the identification module there are document verifiers, READERS of DNI-e, fingerprints and cameras, which verify the documents.
According to the Minister of the Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, and the Secretary of State for Transport, Concepción Gutiérrez del Castillo, this solution will make it easier and more agile to cross the borders for citizens of the European Union. The pilot process will be in operation for six months, after which an evaluation will be carried out with a view to carrying out a nationwide installation. (In the photo: Barcelona El Prat Airport)
