Colombia. More than 700 video surveillance cameras will be installed in the different areas of Bogotá; the equipment is expected to begin operations in mid-2010.Currently the video surveillance system of the city has 392 cameras and with the development of this new security project the town will have in seven months, approximately, with 1,179 cameras (787 new), which will be located in district schools, border areas and critical points.
The installation of the devices will be coordinated by the Surveillance and Security Fund of Bogotá and their operation will be monitored by the Metropolitan Police of the capital.
The manager of the Surveillance and Security Fund, Fernando Solano, explained that 607 cameras will be installed in 192 schools in the city in agreement with the Ministry of Education, in order to provide greater protection to institutions because in these there have been some cases of theft and distribution of psychoactive substances to minors.
"The integrated video surveillance system is part of the security strategies that the city has, which aim to generate an effective and rapid response to the actions of the police," Solano said.
