Sony Corporation announced that it reduced its CO2 emissions by about 100,000 tons in 2008 through the use of renewable energy, implementing initiatives such as the Green Energy Certification System and the introduction of solar energy generating systems.Sony Europe has achieved independent certification that any establishment with more than 100 employees is powered by one hundred percent renewable energy, amounting to 190 million kWh or the equivalent of about 55 thousand tons of CO2 emissions.
Sony Group companies in the United States purchased 42 million kWh of renewable energy in fiscal year 2008. This equates to a reduction of 25,000 tons of CO2 in renewable energy consumption. In April 2009, Sony Dadc, a producer of optical discs, announced that it is buying more than 83 million kilowatt hours of environmental energy in the United States annually, enough to meet the organization's electricity consumption.
