Chile. Due to the growing insecurity in the department of Tarapacá in Chile, with vehicle theft and drug trafficking included, the Government presented a citizen security plan called "Tarapacá seguro", which has the approval of President Sebastián Piñera.Mayor Luz Ebensperger indicated that the program will have an investment of close to US$3 million. Its financing will be through the FNDR or with resources from the regional government.
400 cameras and surveillance gantries will be installed that will be connected to carabineros, police officials will be in charge of controlling them.
According to Ebensperger, when 2010 ends, ten surveillance gantries will be in operation that will allow the detection of vehicle patents to prevent theft.
Cameras and radars will work in surveillance towers along with lookout planes, "which will allow to capture the violations to the unauthorised crossings at the border, since they are the gateway of drugs, illegal immigrants, contraband, among others," he said.
The main objective is to reduce the victimization rate in the Piñera government by 15%.
