3 keys to security and efficiency in critical infrastructures

Infraestructura crítica

Network video surveillance, network audio and analytics solutions are key tools when protecting critical infrastructures.

By Axis Communications

The so-called critical infrastructures are vital to its political, social and economic functioning. Telecommunications, water, energy or mineral supply, waste treatment, oil extraction and many others make up this important block.

Stopping the operation of any of these industries would have a negative effect, and therefore it is essential to have effective solutions that allow their protection and even the improvement of their productivity. It is key to minimize the interruptions that may be generated in these infrastructures and protect not only the spaces but the people who work in them.

Network video surveillance, network audio and analytics solutions are key tools when protecting critical infrastructures. They are even a differential factor, which allows those who use them to foresee what may interrupt the operation and act in advance of problems.

Ignacio Cabañas, Key Account Manager of Axis Communications indicates "in Axis we recognize three primary needs to take into account for critical infrastructures that are to secure facilities, improve productivity and of course protect employees".

1. Secure facilities
Each infrastructure must be protected against the multiple attacks that can be generated. These can be plant intrusions, sabotage, possible thefts or cyber breaches. Taking into account that what is at stake are essential resources for the functioning of society, it is relevant to use security solutions.

A video surveillance solution can prevent unwanted activities from occurring, document incidents, control access to accredited personnel, and even allow the deterrence of intruders thanks to the analytics used in video surveillance and network audio.

The importance of cybersecurity for critical industries cannot be ignored, the data that this industry may possess must also be protected with a trusted provider that guarantees to minimize digital risks.

2. Improve productivity
Integrating camera networks with access controls, thermal technologies and other security systems allows a broad view of what happens in the facilities of a critical industry. This makes it possible to take timely measures, for example, in mining to detect anomalies and act quickly against them. The continuous inspection that occurs thanks to video surveillance solutions can detect even if there is a loose screw in a machine in the production process, which not only maintains the safety of employees, but also allows the problem to be solved more efficiently.

3. Protect the human factor
This is a primary need for any company, however, in critical industries this need becomes even more imperative because some of its activities may involve risks to workers. Protection must have a proactive approach that seeks the well-being of each worker.

A video surveillance solution can help provide real-time responses, but also prevent future risks; An example of this is detecting if one of the workers is not wearing safety elements, such as his helmet, or also detecting a fall, potentially dangerous leaks or notifying if there is an exit that is blocked. These are just a few of the features that keep every employee safe in a critical, forward-thinking industry.

Addressing each of these needs is of vital importance for the safety and well-being of individuals, communities and countries. A recent and tangible example of this is the camera system at the Mochovce nuclear power plant.

Axis provided a video surveillance system that replaced analog cameras with digital, with new and better capabilities for a critical industry. This allowed the nuclear power plant to reduce accident risks and increase its operational efficiency.

The importance of protecting and improving security in critical infrastructures is undeniable, especially in countries like Mexico, where according to the Ministry of Economy the mining sector contributes to 2.05% of total GDP.

"It is crucial that every worker and the industry itself is protected by audio and video surveillance solutions that ensure there are no unnecessary or foreseeable disruptions and that industry objectives are achieved. Protecting this industry will improve safety and efficiency while guaranteeing the operation of critical infrastructures that are vital for the well-being of people and the development of the country," said Ignacio Cabañas.
