A unique moment in the history of knowledge

Reader friends. Again and as always it is a pleasure to sit down and write this column, thinking that it is one of the possibilities we have to get to know each other better. On this occasion, I would like us to think about the possibilities that this era of rapid technological advances is offering us.

Although we have sometimes criticized the use that is given to technology (for example when using the Internet for the spread of a virus, among other things), the truth is that we must now highlight the positive contributions it is bringing to society, especially with regard to the spread of knowledge and the possibility that people have to break the barriers fí sicas to relate to others.

Looking for alternatives to link both processes (the transmission of knowledge and personal interrelationship), questions arise about the applications that at any given time can fulfill both tasks within the security industry. One of the fashions that could be taken advantage of is that of social networks, so named in recent days thanks to Facebook, Myspace, HI5, and others.

What could we do with those tools (maybe I'm discovering warm water)? These networks constitute the evolution of the concept of communities, successfully implemented by Microsoft, and which served to bring together thousands of people around a common interest. However, and I can be ignorant, I consider that the concept of social networks is much more dynamic than that of communities, since thousands of people enter the first ones daily to update comments and add new informative elements, among other activities.

Specifically, these networks would be an excellent tool for the dissemination of technical information on the implementation and maintenance of security systems, as well as for the generation of awareness about the criminal modalities, the vulnerabilities of the systems and the achievement of common objectives for these groups (approval of laws in the legislatures of their countries). ses to raise standards of both physical and computer security).

However, it is an idea that must be matured (again, I can sin by trying to invent warm water) because it also has its risks, such as the possibility of dangerous computer viruses spreading, as happened at the beginning of the year when about two million people around the world were affected. Many of those harmed belong to Facebook.

From this point of view, it is important to understand that technology is offering a multiplicity of possibilities to shorten the distances between societies, but that this does not mean that security should be abandoned in its management.

This was all for today dear readers. We invite you to continue working for a better, safe life for all.
