A year that showed a clear change of trend

Reader friends. 2007 is over; I can only thank you for the accompaniment you gave us during this season and take the opportunity, of course, to wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year 2008.

But beyond the congratulations and so on, it is important to make an analysis of a trend that was clearly observed and that was reflected in the change of mentality of the public sectors when it comes to protecting cities. It can be said, without fear of being mistaken, that 2007 was the year in which more investments were made in terms of citizen security.

Shenzhen (China), Paris and New York, in the first world, and Mexico City, Barceloneta (Puerto Rico), Palmira (Colombia), were some of the populations on the planet that decided to complement their police forces with security technology, which indicates that the electronic part is gaining more and more ground in the field of protection.

This also implies that the public sector is the one that is making the large investments in security, changing a little the spending curve in this segment that had traditionally been led by the banking and retail segment, fundamental links of the private sector.

For next year the trend seems to be confirmed and everything seems to indicate that big business will be on the sides of the government; integrating firms will have to be more than ever aware of the lists of public tenders.

However, there is another thing no less positive: there are a number of medium-sized projects that are magnificent opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises, since it is indisputable that to participate in public contracts you have to be a large firm with financial muscle to withstand the negotiation process. It seems then that there will be business for everyone.

A lot of attention will have to be paid to the market, as the fact that the world is increasingly insecure triggered security purchases over the past year. Without the increase in insecurity being a fact to applaud, at least we will continue to have work for a couple of more years.
